Quality inspection is a routine part of the traditional processing and manufacturing process; when mass-produced parts are manufactured from the production line, some parts are randomly sampled to ensure accurate dimensions. Special testing tools are generally required during the testing process. These mainly include coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and inspection instruments.

A coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is a precision tool that detects multiple points on a part to determine if the part meets relevant specifications. Inspection gauges are another form of inspection equipment used to quickly and accurately determine whether a part meets basic tolerances.

These inspection tools need to meet rigidity and accuracy requirements. They are generally custom-made from aluminum on traditional production lines. However, manufacturing is expensive and consumes precious shipping time. As the complexity of the machined parts increases, it becomes more cumbersome to manufacture inspection tools that need to be matched.

Why machining complex parts is difficult

For a traditional three-axis milling machine, if the part is too complex, it will exceed the machine-specific parameter limits, such as the inability to perform a thorough cutting operation. This will make some complex models unable to be produced by traditional methods, and thus have to modify the design of detection tools to compromise production.

After the design drawing is modified to conform to the traditional production method, if you want to process the fixture, you must set it in CAM software in advance. This process requires choosing which tools will be used for cutting and planning the cutting path for each tool. Since more complex surface shapes usually require more cutting operations
, the workload of the CAM software is increased and a large number of skilled operators are required to make the parts.

Better solution

Facts have proved that traditional processing can no longer be applied to all scenarios. The birth of 3D printing is an important complement to traditional manufacturing processes. 3D printers are popular with users because of the variety of materials they can choose and the different processes that can meet the customization needs of different industries. Using 3D printers can produce rugged, accurate tooling fixtures, while reducing costly and time-consuming CAM processes. The 3D printing slice software is responsible for all the preliminary preparations, so the task of the operator is to design the model and then start printing. With a 3D printer, even high-complexity models can be printed effortlessly, so that complex tooling fixtures can be manufactured with lower production and time costs.
